MBTA Crash Metro North Bronx

Bronx NY Commuter Rail Crash Kills 4

Investigators reported Monday that speed was a factor in the Metro North commuter rail train crash in the Bronx, NY that killed 4 people and injured dozens more.  Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board are saying that although the brakes were fully applied, it was not enough to stop the train from derailing as it went through a curve in the Spuyten Duyvil area in the Bronx. The train was reported to have been traveling at a speed of 82 mph in a 30 mph zone.

The train had made 9 stops before the derailment, officials reported, so the brakes were working prior to it hitting the curve. Four people were killed and 63 others were injured. A passenger who survived the crash described seeing fellow passengers being tossed around like ragdolls, 3 of those passengers listed in critical condition as of Monday while 19 of those passengers still remain hospitalized with serious but stable conditions.
